Taylor Wins GWC Outdoor Track Male Athlete of Year

NAPERVILLE, Ill. - CSU Bakersfield star sophomore sprinter Jordan Taylor (Palmdale, Calif., William Knight HS) has been named the 2012 Great West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Male Athlete of the Year as voted on by coaches in the conference. Utah Valley javelin thrower McKell Camp won the women's award. Both were announced by the conference on Monday.

Not only did Taylor win both the 100- and 200-meter events at CSUB's first-ever appearance in the GWC Championships in May, but he also set conference records in both with times of 10.27 seconds and 20.84 seconds, respectively. His performance helped Taylor earn the GWC Championship Meet's Outstanding Male Performance Award. The 10.27 mark also set a CSUB record as the fastest ever and Taylor is now second in the CSUB record books in the 200. At the GWC meet, Taylor was also a member of the 4X100 relay that took second place and ran a leg for CSUB's fifth-place 4X400 relay team.

"I am very happy for Jordan to receive this award," CSUB Director of Track and Field Alan Collatz said. "It's great that the conference recognizes what a fantastic year he had representing CSUB at the highest level, both on and off the track."

For the second time in as many chances, Taylor also qualified for the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field West Preliminary Round in both the 100 and 200. He advanced to the quarterfinals in both events.

During the season, Taylor was twice named the GWC Male Athlete of the Week.

The 2012 outdoor track season was the first for CSUB as an affiliate member of the GWC.

Freshman Roadrunner Alyssa Page (Santa Rosa, Calif., Montgomery HS) was nominated for the women's award. Page wasted no time in becoming a vital piece of the CSUB women's track and field program, breaking her way into the Roadrunner record books and tallying a number of impressive performances in her freshman year with CSUB. She is fourth in the 200 with a time of 24.33 seconds, she is 13th in the 400 with a time of 56.80 and she is 14th in the 100 with a time of 12.28.

Page was also a member of CSUB's outstanding 4X400 relay team that tied for ninth in 'Runner history with a time of 3:50.16. After finishing in the top 10 in the 100, 200 and 400 at multiple meets throughout the season, Page finished the season with a bang with a third-place finish to medal at the Great West Conference Championship Meet with her fastest mark of the year at 24.33 seconds. Page also placed fifth in the 400 and was a member of the 'Runners' 4X400 relay team that placed third and the 4X100 relay team that placed fourth at the GWC Championships.

Camp won the women's award after finishing the season ranked No. 25 overall in the United States in the javelin. The junior from Salina, Utah, won the GWC Championship with a throw of 166-11, which at the time moved her up to No. 14 overall in collegiate rankings and No. 24 overall in the country. She was honored with the GWC Outstanding Female Performance Award at the GWC Championship meet after her record-setting toss. She also earned an invitation to the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field West Preliminary Round.
