SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.--Cal Poly (28-19) pitcher Joey Wagman struck out 10 as the Mustangs defeated CSU Bakersfield (19-24) 6-1 in the opener of a four-game series Friday night. Wagman limited CSUB to four hits in eight innings of work.
Mitch Hanigar's RBI double gave the Mustangs the lead in the bottom of the first. Taking advantage of a Cal Poly error, J.P. Maestas' (R-Jr., Nipomo, Calif., Allan Hancock College) tied the game with an RBI double of his own in the top of the second. The Mustangs went back into the lead in the bottom of the second when Nick Torres homered to left.
Tim Wise made 3-1 when he homered to open up the third inning. Cal Poly added two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth. Mike Miller was 3-for-5 to pace the Mustangs. Michael Colback relieved Wagman in the ninth and struck out two CSUB batters to increase the Roadrunners' strikeouts to 12 for the game.
The series continues Saturday in San Luis Obispo beginning at 6 p.m.
