LA JOLLA, Calif.—Jessica Browning (Jr., Lake Forest,
Calif., El Toro HS) scored with
one second remaining in sudden death overtime to give CSU Bakersfield (24-17) a 7-6 victory over Colorado State
(7-22) in the fifth place match of the WWPA Tournament Sunday afternoon.
Browning and Shannon McKenzie (R-Jr., Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.,
Rancho Cucamong HS) had the CSUB goals in a first period that was tied 2-2. The
match remained tied (4-4) at halftime.
Kallie Berry
gave the Rams the lead for the first time 1:17 into the third period. For the
second consecutive day, Alex Bayer (Fr., Alta Loma, Calif., Los Osos HS) made a save on a
penalty shot (from the Rams' Caroline Young), keeping the Roadrunners within
one.
A second CSU penalty shot, taken by Berry, early in the fourth quarter, went off
the post. Browning converted a penalty shot with 1:32 to go in the fourth to
tie the score. The Roadrunners earned a 6-on-5 with 37 seconds to go, but CSUB
couldn't convert. The Rams called timeout with 18 seconds remaining in
regulation setting up a shot for Amber Bryan at the buzzer which was saved by
Bayer.
The teams did not score in the first overtime. Amanda Nesbit's (Jr., Chino Hills, Calif.,
Chino Hills HS) shot with just under a minute to go in the second OT went off a
Colorado State defender, giving CSUB a new shot
clock. The Roadrunners worked the ball into Bianca Adams (So., Ontario, Calif.,
St. Lucy Priory HS) who scored at the 36-second mark. Bryan tied the match with 10 seconds to go in
the period with a shot from 10-meters out.
Browning's game winning goal, her fourth of the game, was taken from 15 meters
out and went off a Rams' defender into the top right of the net.
“Jessica's game winner came off of a broken play,” said
Gall. “We couldn't get the ball into the goal, so Jessica took the opportunity
and capitalized on it. Alex was phenomenal today. She came up huge on the two
five-meter attempts. Our defense was solid throughout. We had to rely on our
bench and they came up big again.”
Bayer reset the school record for most saves in a match with
22. Megan Pezzolla (Jr., Upland, Calif.,
Bonita HS) held the previous mark of 21 which was set in the final regular season
match of the 2011 season. Bayer's record setting performance earned her a spot on the All-Tournament team. CSUB's 24 wins are the second most in school and are
the most since the 2007 season.
