LA JOLLA, Calif.—Jackie Walters' power play goal with 59 seconds to go in the fourth quarter gave Cal State Monterey Bay (18-13), the No. 6 seed, a 10-9 victory over No. 3 CSU Bakersfield (22-17) in the quarterfinals of the WWPA Tournament at UC San Diego Friday afternoon.
A pair of Nikki Smart goals helped the Otters take a 3-1 lead midway through in the first period. The Roadrunners rallied, tying the score at four on Caitlyn Hill (Fr., Porterville, Calif., Porterville HS) goal with 52 seconds remaining in the stanza.
Jessica Browning (Jr., Lake Forest, Calif., El Toro HS) and Sam Shead (Jr., Johannesburg, South Africa, Rand Park HS) both scored during the second period as the Roadrunners took a 6-5 lead into halftime.
Smart's third goal helped the Otters take a 7-6 lead before Janelle Shelby (Fr., San Diego, Calif., Grossmont HS) tied the match at the 6:17 mark of the third quarter. Alex Tyrell's goal late in the third gave Monterey Bay the one-goal advantage heading into the final quarter.
Julie Cooper extended the lead on the first Otters' possession of the fourth quarter. Amanda Nesbit (Jr., Chino Hills, Chino Hills HS) got the Roadrunners to 9-8 with just under six to go. Shead tied the match 1:40 later. After Walters' score, Browning hit the crossbar on the final CSUB offensive possession.
The Roadrunners play the winner of the match between Cal State San Bernardino and the loser of the quarterfinal match between UC San Diego and Sonoma State at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
