Northridge Defeats CSUB 5-2

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—Cal State Northridge (17-20) hit three home runs as the Matadors defeated CSU Bakersfield (18-19) 5-2 Tuesday afternoon at Matador Field.

Kevin Younger's (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Liberty HS) RBI single broke the seal for the Roadrunners in the top of the first. The Matadors loaded with bases with no outs in the bottom of the frame, but Scott Brattvet (Jr., Trabuco Canyon, Calif, Santa Ana College) struck out Miles Williams looking for the first out. Brattvet got Steven Keller to ground into an inning-ending 1-6-3 double play to end the threat.

Northridge loaded the bases again in the second. With one out, Brattvet struck out Ryan Raslowsky and then got Cal Vogelsang to ground into a fielders choice to conclude the inning. The Matadors took the lead in the fourth when Marty Bowen and Kyle Attl hit solo home runs.

Cael Brockmeyer (So., Vineyard Haven, Mass., Avon Old Farms HS) tied the game at two with his fifth home run of the year on the first pitch of the sixth inning. Steven Keller returned the lead to Northridge when smacked a leadoff home run in the bottom of the sixth. Atti singled in Bowen later in the sixth for a 4-2 CSUN lead. The Matadors loaded the bases later in the frame and scored a run as CSUB turned a double play.

The final CSUB scoring threat came in the eighth. With two outs and runners on second and third in the eighth, Northridge closer Louis Cohen struck out Tyler Shryock (So., Tehachapi, Calif., Desert Christian HS) for the final out of the inning.

Brockmeyer was the only CSUB player with more than one hit (2). He also scored two runs. Bowen went 3-for-4 while Attl was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

The Roadrunners continue their 11-game, 8,828-mile roadtrip this weekend at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. Friday's series opener gets underway at 4:35 p.m. (PDT).
