SANTA CLARA, Calif. -The CSU Bakersfield water polo team split the opening day of action at Santa Clara's "The Bronco" on Saturday, rebounding to defeat Cal State San Bernardino 14-10 after falling to No. 8 San Jose State 10-5 to start the tournament.

Against No. 8 San Jose State (16-10), a future MPF rival, Roadrunner goalie Alex Bayer (Fr., Alta Loma, Claif., Los Osos HS) made 12 saves to keep CSUB (21-14) in the match. Jessica Browning (Lake Forest, Calif., El Toro HS) led the scoring with two goals, while Bianca Adams (Ontario, Calif., St. Lucy's Priority HS), Shannon McKenzie (R-Jr., Rancho Cucamunga, Calif., Rancho Cucamunga HS) and Taylor Hanson (So., Modesto, Calif., Johansen HS) each added one.

Also in the match, Sam Shead (Jr., Johannesburg, South Africa, Rand Park HS) drew three exclusions and one four-meter. McKenzie also added three assists.

"We had some good looks at the goal, but failed to convert in critical situations," said CSUB head coach Jason Gall. "Bayer made some big saves for us."

In the WWPA victory against San Bernardino, Janelle Shelby (Fr., San Diego, Calif., Grossmont HS) and Caitlyn Hill (Porterville, Calif., Porterville HS) led the scoring attack with four goals apiece. Hanson scored two goals, while Browning and Amanda Nesbit (Jr., Chino Hills, Calif., Chino Hills HS) each chipped in one goal.

Paige Tsuruda (So., Honolulu, Hawaii, Word of Life Academy) had five assists and Shelby drew four ejections. Baley had one save in the first quarter before Chiyeko Morisaki (So., Lodi, Calif., Tokay HS) took over in the net and made eight saves over the final three quarters.

"We played good defense in the first half," Gall said. "It was a nice conference win."

The 'Runners will be back in action today at "The Bronco" when they face two more WWPA opponents in Sonoma State at 8:45 a.m. and No. 19 UC San Diego at 1:45 p.m.
