Washington Sweeps CSUB 13-1

SEATTLE, Wash.--Washington (15-7) completed a three-game sweep of CSU Bakersfield (7-14) 13-1 in baseball action Sunday afternoon.

Husky center fielder Jayce Ray led off the bottom of the first with a single. After moving to second on a bunt and to third on a groundout, he scored when Michael Camporeale beat out an infield single. The rally continued when Branden Berry was hit by a pitch and Jacob Lamb singled up the middle to score Camporeale.

After Lamb stole second base, freshman Trevor Mitsui smacked a single to left, driving in a pair to stake the Huskies to the early 4-0 lead. In the second, the Huskies got two aboard on a single from Ty Afenir and a walk to Ray. After a bunt, freshman Robert Pehl came through with a single to right-center, driving in a pair to stretch the lead to 6-0. In the fourth, the UW loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batter before a bases-loaded walk to Lamb forced in a run. The Huskies kept at it in the fifth. After Afenir was hit by a pitch to open the inning, Ray sliced a triple down the right-field line, scoring the runner ahead of him. A Caleb Brown sacrifice fly scored Ray, making it a 9-0 score.

Bakersfield got on the board in the sixth when catcher Cael Brockmeyer (So., Vineyard Haven, Mass., Avon Old Farms HS) led off the inning with a solo homer, his third of the year. It was just the third hit, and third baserunner, for the Roadrunners. Washington got a run in the sixth when Trevor Mitsui doubled, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a B.K. Santy groundout. In the eighth, a pinch-hit single from Andrew Ely, a bases-loaded double play and an Erik Forgione single completed the UW scoring.

Frank Martinez (Jr., Riverside, Calif., East L.A. College) and Tyler Shryock (So., Tehachapi, Calif., Desert Christian HS) both had two hits for CSUB.

CSU Bakersfield baseball returns to Hardt Field March 27 and 28, hosting a two-game series against Air Force. The Roadrunners will also honor the military with a “Military Appreciation” series that includes a 'civilian rations' collection for Operation Interdependence.

Fans are asked to look at the list below and donate small items that will be put into care packages and sent to our troops overseas. While the items must be small enough to fit into a one-quart bag, these “civilian ration” packages will provide up to 50 members of a platoon a small comfort from home. Donations will be collected at the entrance of Hardt Field, monetary donations will also be collected to help with shipping costs. Operation Interdependence estimates each box of civilian rations, which serves 50 soldiers, costs between $32 and $35.

For more information about Operation Interdependence visit them at oidelivers.org. Tickets for active and retired military are just $3 with military I.D. during the series. First pitch is scheduled for 6 P.M. on Tuesday, March 27 and 5 P.M. on Wednesday March 28.
