Shelby?s Five Goals Help CSUB Split At RR II

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--Janelle Shelby (Fr., San Diego, Calif., Grossmont HS) scored on all five of her shot attempts as CSU Bakersfield (18-11) defeated Redlands 9-6 in the final match of the Roadrunner Invitational II Sunday afternoon.

Shelby scored a goal in each of the first three periods before adding two tallies in the final quarter. Bianca Adams (So., Ontario, Calif., St. Lucy's Priory HS), Caitlyn Hill (Fr., Porterville, Calif., Porterville HS), Sam Shead (Jr., Johannesburg, South Africa, Rand Park HS), and Taylor Hanson (So., Modesto, Calif., Johansen HS) also scored in the match.

Brown defeated the Roadrunners 9-8 in Sunday's opening match. Tied 5-5 at halftime, the Bears outscored CSUB 3-1 in the third quarter. Jessica Browning (Jr., Lake Forest, Calif., El Toro HS) cut the Brown lead to 8-7 with a goal with just over five minutes to go. Madison Pepper posted what proved to be the gamewinner at the 1:25 mark for the Bears. Shead made it 9-8 with 52 seconds remaining.  The Roadrunners got a stop and got the ball back with 18 seconds to go, but CSUB committed a turnover with six seconds left as Brown earned the victory.  Browning and Hanson each scored three goals.

“Although we were not happy with the two losses this weekend, the results exposed some areas of focus for us,” said CSUB head coach Jason Gall. “We have a big weekend at home next weekend with three conference games. This team is extremely motivated and I know that we will work hard to improve our game this week and be ready for next weekend.”

CSUB hosts the Roadrunner Invitational III Mar. 31-Apr. 1 at the Hillman Aquatics Center.
