CSUB Splits On Day 1 Of Roadrunner Invitational II

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--CSU Bakersfield (17-10) split a pair of matches on the first day of the Roadrunner Invitational II Saturday afternoon.

CSUB opened the tournament with a 7-3 victory over Fresno Pacific. The Falcons jumped out to a 2-0 lead before the Roadrunners tied the match in the first quarter. Freshman goalie Alex Bayer (Fr., Alta Loma, Calif., Los Osos HS) led a CSUB defense which allowed a goal in the second and shutout the Fresno Pacific in the second half. Bayer made 13 saves. Sam Shead (Jr., Johannesburg, South Africa, Rand Park HS) scored two goals.

The win against Fresno Pacific tied CSUB head coach Jason Gall with Bob Steele (85-99, 1998-04) as the all-time winningest coach at CSU Bakersfield. Gall is in his fiffth season as the head man in Bakersfield, and is 85-93 at CSUB.

“We played great defense in the second half against Fresno Pacific,” said Gall.

Cal State East Bay jumped out to a 7-3 first half lead and held on to defeat the Roadrunners 11-10 in Saturday's second game. The Pioneers  Trailing 11-7 with six minutes to play, Janelle Shelby (Fr., San Diego, Calif., Grossmont HS) scored with 5:59 remaining. Jessica Browning (Jr., Lake Forest, Calif., El Toro HS) closed the margin at the 4:08 mark with a goal. With 19 seconds left, CSUB made it 11-10 on Browning's fourth tally of the match, but the Pioneers were able to run out the clock and defeat the Roadrunners for the second time this season by one goal.

Bayer made 14 saves as did East Bay goalie Jayme Pekarske. The CSUB offense was unlucky as seven of the 34 Bakersfield shots either went off the post or the crossbar.

“We had too many defensive mistakes and missed opportunities on offense,” Gall said. “We need to regroup and get ready for two tough games on Sunday.”

CSUB hosts Brown (9:15 a.m.) and Redlands (2:15 p.m.) Sunday to complete tournament play.
