BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--Taylor Hanson (So., Modesto, Calif., Johansen HS) broke a 6-6 tie with 6:11 remaining to lift CSU Bakersfield (11-8) past No. 19 Long Beach State 8-6 on the opening day of the first Roadrunner Invitational Saturday afternoon.
The Roadrunners trailed 3-1 after the first period, but battled back to shutout the 49ers in the second quarter and take 4-3 advantage into the break. Both teams scored twice in the third period before Hanson broke the tie with her second goal of the match. Jessia Browning's (Jr., Lake Forest, Calif., El Toro HS) second goal of the match created the final two-goal margin. Long Beach State had a power play with just under a minute to go, but Megan Pezzolla (Jr., Upland, Calif., Bonita HS) posted a save on Julia Garyfallou's shot and the 'Runners went onto victory.
CSUB opened the tournament earlier in the day with a 13-9 victory over Wagner College. Janelle Shelby (Fr., San Diego, Calif., Grossmont HS), the current KAP7 WWPA Player of Week, scored four goals to pace the Roadrunners. Shannon McKenzie (R-Jr., Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., Rancho Cucamonga HS) charted a hat trick while Sam Shead (Jr., Johannesburg, South Africa, Rand Park HS) had two goals. Pezzolla and Alex Bayer (Fr., Upland, Calif., Bonita HS) combined for nine saves.
"The team is really starting to play well, said CSUB head coach Jason Gall. Defensively, we had a strong first three quarters against Wagner. Against Long Beach we came out flat and gave up three quick goals but we tightened up our defense and only allowed three more goals the rest of the way. Our shot blockers are doing a great job of funneling the shots and Megan (Pezzolla) had a really strong game in the cage. We were able to execute on some of the things that we have been working on in practice. I am very pleased with where we are at right now. We are looking forward to another tough day tomorrow."
The Roadrunners face No. 12 Indiana and Bucknell to conclude the tournament Sunday. CSUB plays the Hoosiers at 11:15 a.m. and the Bison at 2:30 p.m.
