CSUB Water Polo Splits At Cal Baptist

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The CSU Bakersfield water polo team split a pair of matches at the Cal Baptist Mini Lancer Invite Saturday afternoon at the Lancers Aquatics Center.
Taylor Hanson posted a hat trick including what proved to be the gamewinner with 3:50 remaining to help give the Roadrunners a 9-8 victory over Cal Baptist in the morning session. Megan Pezzolla (Jr., Upland, Calif., Bonita HS) made 10 saves and led a Roadrunner defense that withstood a Cal Baptist power play in the final 19 seconds of the match.

Jessica Browning (Jr., Lake Forest, Calif., El Toro HS) who entered the weekend third in Division I in goals scored, notched two more tallies. Shannon McKenzie (R-Jr., Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., Rancho Cucamonga HS), Sam Shead (Jr., Johannesburg, South Africa, Rand Park HS), Paige Tsuruda (So., Honolulu, Hawaii, Word of Life Academy), and Janelle Shelby (Fr., San Diego, Calif., Grossmont HS) each posted a goal for CSUB.  

“It was a solid effort,” said CSUB head coach Jason Gall. “There was a definite improvement from the opening weekend.”

For the second consecutive weekend, No. 6 Arizona State defeated CSUB in a tournament.  The Sun Devils, a future MPSF opponent, handed a 14-7 loss to the Roadrunners during the afternoon session. ASU jumped out to a 6-2 lead after the first quarter and led 7-4 at halftime.

Shelby and Tsuruda each scored two goals to pace the Roadrunners. Hanson, Browning, and Amanda Nesbit (Jr., Chino Hills, Calif. (Chino Hills HS) rounded out the CSUB scoring. Pezzolla made seven saves.

“We started off slow and did a good job of getting back into the game,” Gall said. “We improved upon some of the things we have been working on so it was great to see us be able to make the adjustments. The goal was to improve upon last weekend and we definitely did that. We are looking forward to another week of training before we meet Arizona state again next weekend.”

CSUB takes on Arizona State in the opening round of the UC San Diego Triton Classic next Saturday at 8:30 a.m. The Roadrunners will face either No. 16 UC Santa Barbara or No. 17 UC San Diego in the second round of the tournament on Saturday afternoon.
