SEASIDE, Calif.—Sam Shead (Jr., Johannesburg, South Africa, Rand Park HS) scored what proved to be the gamewinner with 1:08 remaining as No. 20 CSU Bakersfield (6-7) defeated Cal State Monterey Bay 15-13 in a WWPA water polo match Sunday afternoon.
The Roadrunners led 8-5 at halftime time with each team scoring four goals in the third quarter. The score was tied 13-13, setting the stage for Shead's gamewinner. Shannon McKenzie (R-Jr., Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., Rancho Cucamonga HS) added an insurance goal with 13 seconds to go, her fifth of the day. McKenzie also dished out four assists. Megan Pezzolla (Jr., Upland, Calif., Bonita HS) made 10 saves in the net.
“It was a tough weekend for us traveling to three different pools, each of which has a smaller course,” said CSUB head coach Jason Gall. “Although we would have like to have won all three, getting two conference wins is a good weekend. We were able to take some things away from the matches that will help us in the future.”
The Roadrunners are at the Cal Lutheran Posada Royale Invitational next Saturday in Thousand Oaks.
