No. 20 CSUB Splits A Pair Of WWPA Matches Saturday

HAYWARD, Calif.—No. 20 CSU Bakersfield (5-7) split a pair of water polo matches Saturday in northern Calfornia.

CSUB defeated Sonoma State 10-8 in Rohnert Park to open the day. Jessica Browning (Jr., Lake Forest, Calif., El Toro HS) scored two goals and drew two exclusions including a five-meter. Sam Shead (Jr., Johannesburg, South Africa, Rand Park HS) charted two goals and had three assists. Taylor Hanson (So., Modesto, Calif., Johansen HS) also scored two goals. Janelle Shelby (Fr., San Diego, Calif., Grossmont HS) had a goal and made five steals.

Shannon McKenzie (R-Jr., Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., Rancho Cucamonga HS) added three assists. Megan Pezzolla (Jr., Upland, Calif., Bonita HS) made eight saves.

CSUB lost 13-12 to Cal State East Bay in the afternoon in Hayward. The Runners trailed by as many as five in the fourth quarter, but a six-goal final stanza couldn't overcome the Pioneers' advantage. McKenzie charted six goals while Browning tallied two as did Shead. Browning also added four assists. Pezzolla had nine saves.

“We missed a lot of our early opportunities against East Bay,” said CSUB head coach Jason Gall. Many of our shots were not well placed. We showed a lot of character coming back from five down in the fourth quarter, but it was too late. East Bay's small pool took away our transition game, but we still needed to get the stops when we needed them.”

The Roadrunners are at the Cal Lutheran Posada Royale Invitational next Saturday in Thousand Oaks.
