UCD Defeats CSUB 10-6 In 16 Innings

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—UC Davis scored four runs in the top of the 16th inning as the Aggies (4-1) defeated CSU Bakersfield (3-2) 10-6 Friday night at Hardt Field.

With the Aggies leading 4-3 in the ninth, the Roadrunners scored the tying run on a Harry Stanwyck wild pitch. The teams had runners on in the 11th, 12th, and 13th innings before UC Davis went ahead in the 14th on a CSUB error and added a run later in the frame on a Paul Politi sacrifice fly.

The Roadrunners got to 6-5 on a Cael Brockmeyer (So., Vineyard Haven, Mass., Avon Old Farms HS) RBI ground out. CSU Bakersfield tied it again on a Chris Levy wild pitch. What proved to be the gamewinning run was scored on a Evan Wolf sacrifice fly in the 16th. David Popkins recorded his sixth hit of the night to make it a two run advantage. The scoring was capped off by a Scott Kalush single which plated two runs.

Popkins was 6-of-8 on the night, scoring two runs. Politi was 4-of-7 with two runs scored. Brockmeyer and Kevin Younger (Jr., Bakersfield, Calif., Liberty HS) reset the CSUB school record for at-bats in a game with eight (old record was seven set by three players). Brockmeyer and Younger each had two hits. The Roadrunners reset the school for longest game by inning (old mark was 15 set in 2009 against UC Riverside) and most at-bats in a game with 58 (old record was 56 set against Arizona in 2010).

The teams return to the field Saturday at 2 p.m.
