SAN JOSE, Calif. - Sarah Hoag (So., Salinas, Calif., Monterey HS) went the distance and held San Jose
State to one run in leading the CSU Bakersfield softball team to a 4-1 victory
over the Spartans in Game 1 of Friday's doubleheader at SJSU Field. The Roadrunners
were one out away from taking Game 2 as they took a 3-2 lead into the final inning, but the Spartans rallied back in the
bottom of the seventh to win 4-3.
CSUB left fielder Karissa
Veiga (So., Hemet, Calif., Hemet HS) had her hand in every run CSUB scored in
Game 1 as she scored two runs and drove in two more in addition to adding two
hits and a stolen base. She helped the 'Runners strike first as she led off
the third inning with a double before third baseman Amy Ricciardi (So., Chino
Hills, Ayala HS) hit a sacrifice fly to bring her home. In the fourth inning,
Veiga hit a two-run single down the left field line to score pinch runner
Ashley Nahale (Sr., Fremont, Calif., Ohlone College) and shortstop Myshayla
Fryer (So., San Diego, Calif., University HS). The 'Runners added an insurance
run in the sixth when Veiga scored again, this time on a single by center
fielder Laura King (R-Jr., Camarillo, Calif., UNLV). Right fielder Bree Sandoval (Fr., La Verne, Calif., Bonita HS) went 2-for-3 at the plate for CSUB
and King went 2-for-4.
Hoag had a solid
performance in Game 1, surrendering one run, seven hits and two walks while
striking out one over seven innings. The one run came on a solo homer by
Breanna Lopez in the sixth inning.
Game 2 featured a
pitching dual between CSUB's Marissa Hiller (So., Cypress, Calif., Cypress HS)
and San Jose State's Amy Pridmore as the contest remained scoreless though four
innings. Veiga helped CSUB take a 1-0 lead when she hit a single to score Fryer
in the top of the fifth inning. The Spartans answered right back with a two-run
fifth inning, but their lead didn't last long as King led off the sixth with a
double, first baseman Sara Smith (Northridge, Calif. Biola Univ.) reached on a
fielder's choice and then Fryer smacked a double to left-center field to bring
them both home and put CSUB up 3-2.
San Jose State wasn't
ready to give up however, as the Spartans loaded the bases with two outs in the
bottom of the seventh against Hoag, who entered the game in the fifth inning in
relief. Alex Stange then hit a double to right-center field to score the tying
and then winning run.
The Spartans (5-8) and
Roadrunners (3-6) will back on the field for another doubleheader for the final games of the four-game series on Saturday
starting at noon at SJSU Field.
