CSUB Water Polo At UCSD Triton Classic This Weekend

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The CSU Bakersfield water polo team heads to the UCSD Trition Classic this weekend. 11 of the top 20 teams ranked in the current CPWA Top 20 will be entered in the tournament. 

The Roadrunners will open by facing No. 5 Arizona State for the third consecutive weekend Saturday at 8:30 a.m.  The winner of the of CSUB-ASU match will face the winner of the match between No. 16 UC Santa Barbara or No. 18 UC San Diego at 3:10 p.m.  The loser of the 'Runners-Sun Devils' contest will face the loser of the UCSB and UCSD match at 1:50 p.m. Play will continue Sunday with matchups determined by Saturday's results.

“We are looking forward to another challenging weekend,” said CSUB head coach Jason Gall. “Up to this point in the season we have done a good job of recognizing our mistakes from game to game and making the proper adjustments.  We may very likely wind up playing a few conference games this weekend so we need to be ready to play.  We are currently 1-0 in conference and we want to remain undefeateed in conference after this weekend.”

CSUB split a pair of matches at the Cal Baptist Mini Lancer Invite Feb. 4. Taylor Hanson posted a hat trick including what proved to be the gamewinner with 3:50 remaining to help give the Roadrunners a 9-8 victory over Cal Baptist in the morning session. Megan Pezzolla (Jr., Upland, Calif., Bonita HS) made 10 saves and led a Roadrunner defense that withstood a Cal Baptist power play in the final 19 seconds of the match.

Jessica Browning (Jr., Lake Forest, Calif., El Toro HS) who entered the weekend third in Division I in goals scored, notched two more tallies. Shannon McKenzie (R-Jr., Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., Rancho Cucamonga HS), Sam Shead (Jr., Johannesburg, South Africa, Rand Park HS), Paige Tsuruda (So., Honolulu, Hawaii, Word of Life Academy), and Janelle Shelby (Fr., San Diego, Calif., Grossmont HS) each posted a goal for CSUB. 

For the second consecutive weekend, No. 6 Arizona State defeated CSUB in a tournament.  The Sun Devils, a future MPSF opponent, handed a 14-7 defeat to the Roadrunners during the afternoon. ASU jumped out to a 6-2 lead after the first quarter and led 7-4 at halftime. Shelby and Tsuruda each scored two goals to pace the Roadrunners. Hanson, Browning, and Amanda Nesbit (Jr., Chino Hills, Calif. (Chino Hills HS) rounded out the CSUB scoring. Pezzolla made seven saves.
