EVANSTON, Ill.--Bryce Hammond (R-Fr., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield HS) finished seventh at 174 pounds for CSU Bakersfield at the 50th Ken Kraft Midlands Championships Sunday.
Hammond opened the wrestlebacks by defeating Iowa State's Tanner Weatherman 9-7. In the consolation semifinals, Hammond, the seventh seed, dropped a 4-3 decision to the sixth seed, John-Martin Cannon of the University of Buffalo. Hammond won by forfeit over Craig Kelliher of Central Michigan for seventh. Hammond won his first two matches of the tournament by a combined score of 24-5 to advance to the quarters where he met the second seed, Robert Kokesh of Nebraska. Kokesh, who is ranked eight in Division I by Intermat, defeated Hammond by technical fall.
Miguel Comparan (R-Sr., Buena Park, Calif., Buena Park HS) is the other CSUB wrestler taking part in Sunday's action. Comparan lost his first match at 125 pounds before winning his next three in the consolation bracket. He lost to the seventh seed, North Carolina's Nathan Kraisser 6-0 on Sunday.
Adam Fierro (So., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield HS) went 3-2 before bowing out in the consolation round of 24. Tyler Iwamura (R-Sr., San Diego, Calif., Santa Fe Christian HS) advanced to the round of 16 before losing his next two matches. Timmy Box (R-Fr., 141, Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield HS), Dalton Kelley (R-Jr., 149, Alamosa, Colo., Alamosa HS), and Reuben Franklin (So., Murrieta, Calif., Vista Murrieta HS)all went 1-2 and were eliminated on Saturday.
CSUB tied for 22nd with Kent State (26). Illinois (99.5) won the team race. The Roadrunners host Rutgers Thursday night in CSUB's Old Gym beginning at 6 p.m.
