BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--Redshirt sophomore center Janae Coffee (Fresno, Calif., Long Beach State) nearly turned a triple double to lead CSU Bakersfield past Fresno Pacific 115-79 in women's basketball exhibition action Monday night.
Coffee, the tallest player in CSUB history at 6-4, scored 29 points (on 13-of-17 shooting), grabbed 12 rebounds, and blocked seven shots in only 23 for the Roadrunners. Using Coffee's size, CSUB was consistenly able to move the ball inside against the Sunbirds, scoring 82 of the team's 115 points from the paint.
Coffee led CSUB players in double figures. Tyonna Outland (R-So., Compton, Calif., Lynwood HS) returned from a knee injury to post 16 points. Amber Williams (Sr., Fontana, Calif., Etiwanda HS) scored 16. Cebrina Johnson (R-So., Corona, Calif., Santiago HS) posted 13. Brooklynn Hinkens (So., Lake Tapps, Calif., Auburn-Riverside HS) charted 11 while Alyssa Shannon (Fr., Bakersfield, Calif., Stockdale HS) had 10.
Bakersfield native Keairra White led Fresno Pacific with 28 points. She was 11-of-12 from the free throw line before fouling out late in the contest.
"This was a great effort tonight," said CSUB head coach Greg McCall. "I am really proud of our team and how hard they played. We have a short turnaround this week and have to get better to be ready for Arizona."
The Roadrunners open the 2012-13 season Friday night when CSUB hosts Arizona at 8:30 p.m. as part of a doubleheader with the Roadrunner men's basketball team. The CSUB men host UT Arlington at 6 p.m. For tickets call 654-BLUE.
