BOISE, Idaho - The CSU
Bakersfield volleyball team had one of its most efficient attacking
performances of the season in Sunday's match against Boise State, but the
Broncos still came out on top by defeating the Roadrunners 3-0 (26-24, 25-19,
25-23).
CSUB (12-15) finished
the match with a .350 attacking percentage, which its its second-highest
efficiency rate of the season (second only to CSUB's .356 it put up against
UMES on Sept. 20). Boise State (14-12) hit .406.
"Boise State came out
ready for us, but it was a well-played volleyball match overall," said CSUB
head coach Jolene Shepardson. "Not a lot of unforced errors and a lot of
aggressive plays. We made them work for their points."
Junior outside hitter Debora Araujo (Belo
Horizonte, Brazil, Western Nebraska C.C.) recorded 16 kills, nine digs and two
aces to lead the Roadrunners, while freshman opposite hitter Kelsee Sawyer
(Temecula, Calif., Great Oak HS) totaled 11 kills. Junior setter Fernanda Gonçalvez (Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Western Nebraska C.C.) posted 36 assists,
six digs, four kills and three aces and libero Mariah Alvidrez (R-So.,
Bakersfield, Calif., Liberty HS) had 11 digs, which tied a match high with
Boise State's Kersti Whitney. Leah Stevens and Liz Harded led the Broncos with
10 kills apiece.
The first set was
extremely close with the teams trading the lead back and forth and neither
pulling ahead by more than three points in the entire match. The second set
started off close as well, but with the 'Runners and Broncos tied at 7-all, the
Broncos rattled off a 5-0 rally to gain a lead they never gave up. In the third
set, Boise State jumped out to a 6-1 lead, but CSUB battled back to tie the
frame at 19-all. The Broncos scored the next two points and were able to hang
on for the win.
Sunday's match was the second close showdown between CSUB and Boise State this season as the Broncos topped CSUB 3-1 (25-23, 21-25, 25-16, 28-26) on Oct. 6 at the Icardo Center.
The 'Runners are in the middle
of a six-match road trip that will conclude the 2012 season. With four matches
left on the schedule, CSUB will first head to Hawaii to play Hawaii Pacific on
Wednesday at 7 p.m. (HST) and Chaminade at 7 p.m. (HST) on Friday.
