RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Junior
outside hitter Debora Araujo (Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Western Nebraska C.C.) recorded
her sixth double-double of the season with 15 kills and 13 digs, but it wasn't
enough to lift the CSU Bakersfield volleyball team to a victory as the 'Runners
fell to UC Riverside 3-1 (25-11, 20-25, 25-22, 25-21) on Friday night.
Freshman opposite hitter
Kelsee Sawyer (Temecula, Calif., Great Oak HS) slammed down 14 kills for CSUB.
Mariah Alvidrez (R-So., Bakersfield, Calif., Liberty HS) and Lisa Bartsch (Jr.,
Wuppertal, Germany, Augusta St.) stepped up on defense for CSUB, posting 18 and
13 digs respectively. Junior setter Fernanda Gonçalves (Belo Horizonte, Brazil,
Western Nebraska C.C.) had 33 assists.
The 'Runners got off to
a slow start in the first set, but bounced back to win the second. CSUB
overcame a 4-1 Highlander lead early in the frame, with a 6-0 run to take a 7-4
lead of its own. The Roadrunners maintained the lead for the remainder of the
set, fighting off Highlander attacks to tie up the match at 1-1. The 'Runners
weren't able to hang on to the momentum however, and the Highlanders (6-19) won
the next two to seal the win.
UC Riverside was led by
Ashley Cox with 14 kills, Amanda Vialpando added 12 and Tyler Dorsey had nine.
CSUB (12-14) will be
back in action on Sunday when they travel to Idaho to play Boise State at 1
p.m. (MDT). The Broncos are 12-12, but
will host New Mexico on Saturday before hosting the 'Runners.
