SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.--CSU Bakersfield battled back from a 14-point deficit with just over three minutes to go in the game against Stephen F. Austin, but fell short, 76-71 at the Cal Poly Holiday Invitational.
The Roadrunners rallied from a 72-58 deficit with 3:07 remaining to cut the lead down to 72-70 with just 1:03 left in the game following a layup from Alyssa Shannon (Fr., Bakersfield, Calif., Stockdale HS). However, SFA got a layup from Brittney Matthew to extend the lead to 74-70 and after Shannon made 1-of-2 free throw attempts, Porsha Roberts was able to put the game away for the Ladyjacks with two made free throws with nine seconds remaining to make the final score of 76-71.
Roberts scored 31 points and grabbed 17 rebounds to lead Stephen F. Austin. CSUB (1-4) had four players score in double-figures led by 17 points from Tyonna Outland (R-So., Compton, Calif., Lynwood HS). She was followed by Ciarra Ford (Sr., Long Beach, Calif., Mt. Sac College who scored 15 points. Amber Williams (Sr., Fontana, Calif., Etiwanda HS) had 12 points while Brooklynn Hinkens (So., Lake Tapps, Wash., Auburn-Riverside HS) posted 10 points. The Ladyjacks' defense limited the Roadrunners to just 35 percent shooting for the game and forced 16 turnovers, of which SFA turned into 16 points of their own.
The Roadrunners take on the host, Cal Poly Sunday at 2 p.m. to conclude the tournament.
