BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - With three players in
double digits in kills and a great defensive team effort, the CSU Bakersfield
team won its final home game of the 2012 season, defeating Southern Utah 3-1
(22-25, 25-15, 26-24, 25-16) on Saturday night at the Icardo Center.
Junior outside hitter Debora Araujo (Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Western Nebraska C.C.) led the 'Runner attack
with 19 kills, freshman opposite hitter Kelsee Sawyer (Temecula, Calif., Great
Oak HS) recorded 15 kills and sophomore middle blocker Molly O'Hagan (Tonganoxie,
Kan., Tonganoxie HS) added 11 kills.
Junior setter Fernanda Gonçalves (Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Western Nebraska C.C.) recorded her fourth
double-double of the season by totaling 47 assists and scooping up 10 digs. Libero
Mariah Alvidrez (R-So., Bakersfield, Calif., Liberty HS) led CSUB's stellar
defensive effort, ranging all over the floor and posting a career-high 22 digs.
"It was a great night to
end our home schedule on," said CSUB head coach Jolene Shepardson. "We have
been working on some things like reducing our errors and we came out and executed
that. We had a good, tenacious defensive work tonight which made it hard for
them to score. Southern Utah didn't back down though and I am glad we closed it
out in four."
With the win CSUB
improved to 12-13 on the season, while Southern Utah, which totaled 18 team
blocks and was led by 23 kills from Analaine Mailoto, dropped to 9-16.
CSUB will now hit the
road for the final six matches of the 2012 season beginning with a showdown at
UC Riverside on Friday night.
