MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Winning
its third match in a row, the CSU Bakersfield volleyball team defeated Alabama
State University 3-1
(13-25, 25-22, 25-23, 25-16) on Sunday to complete a two-match weekend sweep of
the Hornents.
Outside hitter Debora Araujo (Jr., Belo Horizonte,
Brazil, Western Nebraska Community College) led the Roadrunners with 15 kills,
while freshman opposite hitter Kelsee Sawyer (Temecula, Calif., Great Oaks HS)
finished with 14 kills. Fernanda Gonçalves (Jr., Belo Horizonte, Brazil,
Western Nebraska Community College) had 39 assists and libero Mariah Alvidrez
(R-So., Bakersfield, Calif., Liberty HS) had a game-high 14 digs.
With the win, CSUB improved to .500 at 10-10 with 10
matches remaining on the season. The Hornets dropped to 4-22. On Saturday, CSUB beat Alabama State 3-0. With the weekend wins, CSUB has already surpassed its 2011 win total of eight.
CSUB got off to a slow start and dropped the first set,
but rallied back to win the next three. The second and third sets featured a
back-and-forth battle with the Roadrunners taking both to gain control of the
match's momentum and then used a 9-1 run to cruise to a Game 4 and match
victory.
CSUB will be back in
action on Thursday with a match at Fresno State and then will travel to Orem,
Utah to take on Utah Valley and Chicago State over the weekend.
