LOS
ANGELES, Calif.-Loyola Marymount (26-25, 10-4 PCSC) scored all 11 of their runs
via the home run as the Lions swept CSUB (15-31, 3-11 PCSC) in a conference
doubleheader Saturday afternoon.
The Lions
defeated the Roadrunners 1-0 in the opener. Loyola Marymount scored the game's
lone run in the bottom of the first when Sam Fischer homered.
LMU's defense came to
the rescue in the CSUB fourth when Nayudu's diving catch led to an
inning-ending double play. After Emily Bliss (So., Northridge,
Calif., Chamindae Prep) singled with one out,
Ryane Peterson (Sr., Fresno, Calif.,
Fresno State) sent a sinking line drive to
right. Jennifer Nayudu dove to catch it but had the ball pop out of her glove
as she stood up. The umpires ruled it a catch, though, and Nayudu doubled
up Bliss at first. The
Roadrunners threatened again in the fifth, only for Molly Medeiros to pitch her
way out of the jam. Singles by Stefanie Frei (Valencia, Calif., Canyon HS) and
Jamie Miller (Sr., Livermore, Calif., Ohlone College) put two on with one out
but Medeiros got Karissa Veiga (Fr., Hemet, Calif., Hemet HS) to groundout and
Jazmine Lee (Fr., Garden Grove, Calif., Los Alamitos HS) to line out to leave
runners on second and third. CSUB would put the tying run on in the seventh on
Veiga's two-out single but Medeiros struck out Lee on a called third strike to
end the game.
Sammy
Rodriguez (Jr., Salinas, Calif., Salinas HS) was the hard-luck loser
as she tossed a complete game three-hitter. Rodriguez struck out three and
walked one. CSUB recorded seven hits.
Loyola
Marymount won game two 10-9 when Fischer hit a game winning two-run home run in
the bottom of the seventh. Kelly Sarginson reset the PCSC record with three
home runs in a game. Sarginson went deep in the
first, third, and fifth innings to become the first player in PCSC history to
homer three times in one game while tying the conference RBI mark (seven).
After failing to
capitalize on scoring chances in game one, CSUB posted three straight singles
to open the game, including a two-run chopper up the middle by Lee, staking the
Roadrunners to an early 2-0 lead. Sarginson tied the game
with a two-run blast in the bottom of the first. CSUB would regain the lead in
the top of the second on three more singles, moving ahead on Miller's single to
right.
A four-run third put the
Lions on top thanks to back-to-back homers from Sarginson and Meghan Harman. After
CSUB pulled a run back in the fourth, Sarginson hit her third home run in the
fifth, a two-run job, for an 8-4 Lion lead.
A five-run sixth put the
Roadrunners back on top. Singles by Petersen and Laura King (So., Camarillo, Calif.,
UNLV) got the inning started and a sacrifice moved the runners over. A single
by Miller brought home Petersen and pulled the visitors back to 8-5 Medeiros
came on in relief of starter Dana Waldusky but was greeted by an RBI single
from Veiga before giving up a go-ahead three-run homer to Lee. CSUB looked to
add to its lead when the next two batters singled, the latter coming when Kylie
Ahlo lost a pop up in the sun at second. A strange inning got even stranger
when Ahlo lost a second ball in the sun but the umpires called the infield fly
rule. When the ball dropped, the runners tried to advance but Sam Fischer
picked up the loose ball and tagged out the trailing runner for an
inning-ending double-play.
Ahlo's single started
the bottom of the seventh, leading to Fischer's game-winning home run. The
Roadrunners posted 17 hits that included three-hit performances from Miller,
Veiga, and King. Lee drove in a total of five runs.
The series concludes
Sunday beginning at 12 p.m.
