San Diego Sweeps CSUB In PCSC Doubleheader

SAN DIEGO, Calif.--The University of San Diego (15-14, 5-1 PCSC) swept a conference doubleheader from CSUB (14-24, 2-4 PCSC) Apr. 16 in San Diego.

The Toreros defeated the Roadrunners 9-1 in the opener. San Diego used a seven-run fifth inning to invoke the mercy rule. Ryane Petersen (Sr., Fresno, Calif., Fresno State) went 2-for-2 and drove in the lone CSUB run. Stefanie Frei (Sr., Valencia, Calif., Canyon HS) also went 2-for-2.

In game two, both teams put up a run in the fourth inning. CSUB pushed across a run in the fifth inning to take a 2-1 lead. The Toreros responded with a two-run sixth inning. Jessica Tieszen walked and moved ahead to second on a sacrifice bunt by Celeste Soto. Lauren Tomey singled to centerfield advancing Tieszen to third base. Allison Stalberger came in to pinch run for Tomey at first base and stole second base putting runners at second and third base. Kimberlee Shimizu hit a sacrifice fly to left field allowing Tieszen to score tying the game at 2-2. On that play, the throw home to the catcher was too late and Stalberger chose to advance to third base forcing the catcher to make a bad throw to third base recording an error. Stalberger took advantage of the poor throw scoring the winning run as USD went on to win 3-2.

Amy Ricciardi (Fr., Chino Hills, Calif., Ayala HS) was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Alyssa Walker (Jr., San Jose, Calif., San Jose CC) took the loss in the circle. She tossed a complete game five-hitter.

CSUB and San Diego continue PCSC action Sunday beginning at 12 p.m.
