Leon Gives Gem Of A Performance As Runners Win In Emerald City

SEATTLE — Senior forward Nikki Leon (Canyon Country/Canyon HS) gave a gem of a performance in the Emerald City, scoring 14 points with career highs of 16 rebounds and seven steals to lead CSUB to a 77–71 win over fellow NCAA Division I Independent Seattle University Saturday evening in the Connelly Center.

Her efforts helped CSUB overcome an eight–point Seattle lead in the final seven minutes as the Roadrunners improved to 15–11 overall. Seattle dropped to 7–17 with the loss. The win also completed a sweep of the season series for CSUB, which defeated Seattle 81–65 in the Icardo Center on Jan. 9.

The 'Runners controlled much of the first half as they led by as many as 10 points and took a 39–30 lead into the lockerroom. But after a Tamiko Davis (Sacramento/San Jose State) layup put CSUB up by 11 early in the second half, Seattle embarked on a 13–2 run to tie the game at 45–45. With CSUB still leading 55–50, the Redhawks appeared to wrest control of the game with a 10–0 run that put them ahead 60–55. They eventually expanded their lead to as many as eight before CSUB made its final push.

Much of CSUB's spectacular second half came as a direct result of Leon's big night. She scored eight points, grabbed 12 boards and collected five steals in the period.

In addition to Leon, sophomore guard Amber Williams (Fontana/Etiwanda HS) led CSUB with 16 points and four assists. Junior forward Jana Williams (Tehachapi HS) added 11 points, seven rebounds and three blocks.

Elle Kerfoot led Seattle with 18 points and seven assists.

CSUB will take a week off before returning to the Icardo Center to host NCAA Division I Independent foe Longwood University Saturday (Feb. 19) at 2 p.m. The 'Runners will recognize members of their 10th Anniversary team at the game.
