TEMPE, Ariz. - The second day of the 2011 CSUB softball season
mirrored the first as the Roadrunners opened with a close loss before taking it
on the chin against a national title contender in their second game.
Friday
morning, new pitchers Alyssa Walker (San
Jose CC) and Sarah Hoag
(Salinas/Monterey HS) limited Cal State Fullerton to six hits but the
offense went silent in a 3-0 loss. Later, No. 12 ranked Cal then exploded for
eight runs in the first inning en route to a 14-1 win over CSUB.
Hoag
pitched four shutout innings of relief to highlight the early action.
Sixth-inning singles by Emily Bliss
(Northridge/Chaminade HS) and Karissa
Veiga (Hemet HS) gave CSUB life against the Titans. They advanced into
scoring position, but the 'Runners couldn't get them home.
Myshayla Fryer's (San Diego/University HS)
RBI single in fifth plated Bliss with CSUB's lone run versus Cal. Bliss had
drawn a one-out walk before moving to third on Stefanie Frei's (Valencia, Calif./Canyon HS) double.
CSUB
closes play at the Kajikawa Classic Saturday when it meets Mississippi at 9
a.m. (AST). The 'Runners return to Bakersfield for their 2011 home opening
doubleheaders Feb. 18-19 against Western Athletic Conference foe San Jose
State. First pitch for both doubleheaders is noon.
