SEATTLE, Wash.—Richard Menjivar's (Sr., Panorama, Calif., Univ. of Evansville) goal with 2:28 remaining in the second overtime gave CSU Bakersfield (11-3-4, 7-3 MPSF) a 4-3 victory over Seattle University (2-13-2, 1-9 MPSF) in the 2011 regular season finale Saturday afternoon at Seattle's Championship Field.
The Roadrunners scored two goals in a span of five seconds early in the first half. Lucas Dall'Orso (Fr., Orange County, Calif., JSerra Catholic HS) took a shot that the went off a Redhawks' player for an own goal at 13:55. At 14:00, Kory Kindle (Jr., Ventura, Calif., Ventura HS) scored his fourth goal when he converted a blast from 12 yards out. Ernesto Hinojosa (Jr., Tustin, Calif., Tustin HS) earned the assist on the play.
Seattle cut the lead to 2-1 in the 17th minute when Scott Greenburg scored. Renalto Bandeira tied the match when he put back his own deflection in the 35th minute. Marshall Kosaka put the Redhawks into the lead when he took a Bobby Segal pass and scored 4:20 into the second half. Hinojosa tied the match with a penalty kick with 6:53 remaining in the second half. Menjivar scored the gamewinner off Jesus Sanchez's (Jr., Chula Vista, Calif., Castle Park HS) 12th assist of the season.
“It was an incredible end to the game,” said CSUB head coach Simon Tobin. “We kept battling and got some great performances from Alexis Flores and Joe Masumiya today. Both Alex and Joe did a great job after not seeing much action this season.”
The Roadrunners will be the No. 2 seed at next week's MPSF Tournament in Denver. The Roadrunners will receive a first round bye and play the highest remaining seed among the teams 3, 4, 5, and 6 on Friday night at either 5 or 7:30 p.m. (MDT) at Ciber Field.
