BAKERSFIELD, Calif.—Richard Menjivar (Sr. Panorama, Calif.,
Univ. of Evansville) scored a pair of
goals as CSU Bakersfield (5-0-4) defeated Seattle University (1-5-2) 3-0 in the
MPSF opener for both schools.
After a scoreless first half, Menjivar broke the seal at
51:54 with a blast from 20 yards out. Gyasi Zardes (R-So., Hawthorne, Calif.,
Leutzinger HS) earned the assist on the play. A little over six minutes later
Menjivar made it 2-0 when he converted an Evan Fassler (R-Jr., Carnation, Wash., Cedarcrest HS)
pass from inside the goalkeeper's box. Jesus Sanchez (Jr., Chula Vista, Calif.,
Castle Park HS) scored in the 66th minute for a 3-0 CSUB advantage. Lucas
Dall'Orso (Fr., Orange County,
Calif., JSerra Catholic HS) was
credited with the assist on the play.
Roadrunners' goalie Eric Shannon (Jr.,
Valencia, Calif., Valencia HS) made eight saves during
his 18th career shutout. CSUB outshot the Redhawks 17-11 and held a 11-3
advantage in corner kicks.
“The first game in conference is difficult for everyone,”
said CSUB assistant coach Keith Costigan. “Everybody comes in on the same page
and I think that showed in the first 45 minutes. We came out a little
tentative, but credit Seattle
with a good job. We were a lot more proactive in the second half and I think it
resulted in getting some goals and the win.”
CSUB travels to Sacramento
State Friday night for a
7 p.m. conference match.
