PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - After
winning three matches in a row, the CSUB Volleyball team earned the right to
play for the championship in the Maryland Eastern-Shore Hawk Invitational on
Saturday night, but fell to the host Hawks 3-1 to finish as the tournament runner-up.
Outside hitter Haleigh Haratyk (So., Corona, Calif., Centennial HS) and libero Lauren Holderman (R-So.
Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield HS) played their way to the UMES
All-Tournament team. Haratyk, who entered the tournament ranked No. 15 in the
nation in kills per set (4.91), posted a double-double in kills and digs in all
four matches. She totaled 79 kills, 42 digs, six service aces and four assisted
blocks and now has five straight double-double performances. Holderman totaled
51 digs, while also adding six assists and two aces over the four matches.
After defeating Alabama
State and North Carolina Central on Friday, the Roadrunners (6-12) continued
their winning ways by beating Hampton 3-1 on Saturday morning. Haratyk hammered
a match-high 25 kills while also adding 10 digs.
Freshman outside hitter
Saelina Dunn (Long Beach, Calif., Wilson HS) posted 14 kills with three
blocking assists and sophomore setter Lisa Bartsch (Wuppertal, Germany, Augusta
State) recorded 25 assists with seven digs while senior setter Danielle Gong
(Bakersfield, Calif., Stockdale HS) tallied 21 assists and 11 digs against the
Pirates.
Leading the defensive effort
for CSU was middle blocker Julia Bowen (Ottawa, Ontario, Wilfrid Lauer Univ.)
who finished with six assisted blocks and one solo block. Holderman scooped up
11 digs.
In the match for the
tournament title, Haratyk once again hit double digits in kills and digs with
22 and 10 respectively. Brittney Hopley (Jr., Thornill, Ontario, Wilfrid Lauer
Univ.) set a new season high with 12 kills and also added one solo block and
two assisted blocks. Bartsch posted 26 assists, Gong added 18 assists and
Holderman had 16 digs.
The runner-up finish is the
second of the season for the 'Runners, who also took second at the Liberty
Invitational to make CSUB's record 5-2 on the East Coast this season.
