CEDAR CITY, Utah - The
Roadrunners rallied back to force a game five, but the CSU Bakersfield
Volleyball team's comeback bid came up just short in a 3-2 loss (20-25, 25-22,
25-15, 16-25, 15-9) to Southern Utah on Tuesday night.
Sophomore outside hitter Haleigh Haratyk (Corona, Calif., Centennial HS) continued her dominating attack at the
net, recording 16 kills and 17 digs for her fifth straight double-double
performance. Haratyk entered the match ranked No. 8 in Division I in kills per
set at 4.7. She also added two aces.
The 'Runners jumped out to
an early lead after winning the first game, but Southern Utah (5-15) took the
lead behind the play off Analaine Pelaez-Mailoto, who finished with a
match-high 27 kills. CSUB then battled back to win the fourth game, aided by a
momentum-shifting run when it outscored the Thunderbirds 10-1, before being
edged in the final game.
"I am pleased with our effort in reducing errors. Unfortunately we didn't put that same energy into aggressive play," said CSU head coach Jolene Shepardson. "We have been working hard on both of htese in training, but were not consistent enough tonight."
CSUB sophomore middle
blocker Chelcy Motes (Thatcher, Ariz., Thatcher HS) set a season-high mark in
kills with 11 and also posted three blocks. Sophomore setter Lisa Bartsch
(Wuppertal, Germany, Augusta State) tallied her fourth double-double of the
season with 20 assists and 16 digs, while senior setter Danielle Gong
(Bakersfield, Calif., Stockdale HS) also put up 20 assists. Libero Lauren Holderman (R-So., Bakersfield, Calif., Bakersfield HS) totaled 19 digs.
The Roadrunners (6-13) are
now headed back to Bakersfield to prepare for their 2011 home opener on Oct. 19
when they will host Fresno State at the Icardo Center at 6 p.m.
