BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Five Roadrunners put up double–figure performances as the CSUB women's basketball team defeated Concordia University, Irvine 90–63 on Friday night at the Icardo Center.
CSUB (12–9) was led in scoring by senior guard Britney McGee (Bakersfield, Calif./Univ. of Albany) as she went 9–17 from the field to lead all players with 20 points while freshman guard Cebrina Johnson (Corona, Calif./Santiago HS) recorded her first career double–double, scoring 14 points and pulling down a game–high 12 rebounds.
Concordia–Irvine (9–4) held the lead two minutes into the game as Tyler Howard knocked down the first three–pointer of the game to give the Eagles a one–point lead. Unfortunately for the Eagles, that was the last time they held the lead, as sophomore guard Amber Williams (Fontana, Calif./Etiwanda HS) countered with a trey of her own to get the Roadrunners back in front. The first half remained close until the 'Runners used a 16–0 run midway through to jump out to a commanding 21–point lead. McGee scored 18–points in the first half to give CSUB a 20–point lead going into the break (49–29).
Not much changed in the second half as CSUB carried over its momentum, with Williams sinking a three to get the half started. Despite 10 second half points from Concordia's Karen Carney and nine from Patrice Hunter, the 'Runners were able to keep the lead in the double–digits, leading by as many as 30 at one point.
Eleven Roadrunners added points to the score column as CSUB cruised to a 90–63 win. Along with McGee and Johnson, Williams (14 points) and senior guard Breana Fields (Sacramento, Calif./San Jose State) (11 points) finished the night in double–figure scoring. Senior center Tamiko Davis (Sacramento, Calif./San Jose State) pulled down 11 rebounds as CSUB outrebounded the Eagles 59–39.
The Roadrunners close out their three–game home stand on Sunday, January 9 as they host fellow–independent Seattle University. Tip–off is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Icardo Center.
