Lady 'Runners Spent Time with Kern County Preschoolers

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Members of the CSUB women's basketball team helped Kern County Preschoolers celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday and Black History Month by hosting a Jammin' Storytime for Preschoolers at the Beale Memorial Library Friday morning.

Jana Smith, Breana Fields, Shawnee Carter, Madison McKenney and Tyonna Outland all shared their favorite childhood books with the children. After the Lady 'Runners each read their stories to the attentive preschoolers they engaged in a discussion with the kids where they shared with them what it was like to be in college and to be a student–athlete. The players even managed to squeeze in a little basketball talk and fielded other inquiries the preschoolers had.

Assistant coach Mandi Carver, who was also in attendance, said the Jammin' Storytime was a lot of fun.

“It was a great event and it was fun to see our players interact with the preschoolers,” said Carver. “It is nice to get out of our routine of school and basketball every once in a while and interact with the kids in our community. It is great not only for the preschoolers but for our team as well.”

The Jammin' Storytime event was part of Harlem and Beyond, which is a community–wide reading project that includes music, art and theatre partnerships. The project takes place January 22–March 5 and celebrates the contributions of African Americans.
