BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The CSUB Women's Basketball All–Decade Team will be honored at halftime during the Roadrunners' Saturday, February 19th game against Longwood University as CSUB celebrates the 25th Annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
CSUB's Women's Basketball program has seen remarkable success through its first decade of existence. The Roadrunners captured three California Collegiate Athletic Association championships and made six–consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances at the Division II level, making them the only school in NCAA history to make a postseason appearance in every season of its existence. The 'Runners have continued to be successful since transitioning to the Division I level as the 2009–10 team became the first CSUB athletic team to earn a postseason bid at the DI level (Women's Basketball Invitational).
Ten CSUB alumni have been selected to the All–Decade Team by CSUB coaches and administrators, as each player on the coveted list has been an integral part of the Roadrunners' success. Among the 10 players selected, two were members of CSUB's 2000–01 inaugural team, in Amanda Baker and Audrie Magdaleno. Other players earning the nod are Heather Garay (2001–03), Diane Dittburner (2002–03), Katie McElree (2002–06), Christine Kepenekian (2005–09), Kelley Tarver (2005–10), Krista Arase (2005–09), Katie Williams (2008–10) and Phynique Allen (2008–10).
Head coach Tim La Kose, who has been at the helm of the program since CSUB's second season, is excited to welcome this outstanding group of players back to Bakersfield.
“Over the past decade, CSUB Women's Basketball has been blessed to have had student– athletes who excelled in the classroom, on the court and in the community,” La Kose said.
“The foundation for the unprecedented success of Roadrunner basketball is due largely to the enthusiasm and efforts of these outstanding women. We look forward to celebrating and honoring their contributions.”
No day is better to celebrate the achievements of successful CSUB female student–athletes than the 25th Annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day. The NGWSD, organized by the National Girls and Women in Sport Coalition, is celebrated in all 50 states and is designed to acknowledge and celebrate the past and current sport achievements of female athletes. The day's celebration highlights the positive influence of sports participation and the continuing struggle for equality and access for women in sports.
Join the Roadrunners in recognizing the achievements of these ten women along with celebrating female sports in general, on Saturday, February 19 at 2 p.m. at the Icardo Center.
