BAKERSFIELD,
Calif. - The CSUB
volleyball team hit for a season-high average and made its fewest errors of the
season, but a solid effort wasn't enough to stop No. 13 UCLA from taking a
25-14-25-17, 25-22 decision in the Roadrunner home opener Thursday night in the
Icardo Center.
A
school NCAA Division I record 1,008 fans turned out to see the 'Runners play
one of their best matches of the season. They hit .232 for the match, including
.370 in the second set, while their eight attack errors were the second fewest
in their Division I era.
But
the Bruins hit .411 and sided out at a cool 66 percent clip to control the
match.
"We're
0-8 and we're much better team than we were last year, we're just playing very
good teams," said CSUB Head Coach John Price. "Six of the eight teams we've
played already have a good shot of making the NCAA Tournament, and we're
playing five nationally-ranked teams over this current two-week stretch.
"We're
young, and we're going to get tested, but we're going to be a much better team
for having faced such a challenging schedule in the first part of the season."
Junior
middle blocker Alysia Baker
(Vista/Tri-City Christian HS) led CSUB with eight kills, four blocks and
two aces while hitting a season-best .538. Junior outside hitter Lindy DeGeare (Stockdale HS) also had
eight kills for CSUB.
Outside
hitters Mari Hole and Meg Norton led UCLA with 13 and 10 kills respectively.
They were the only players for either team to reach double figures.
CSUB
jumps right back into the fray this weekend with three matches at the San Jose
State/Santa Clara Tournament. The 'Runners play fellow NCAA Division I
Independent Seattle Friday night before facing Santa Clara and San Jose State
Saturday.
