Men?s Soccer Finishes Preseason Strong with 2?0 Win

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The CSU Bakersfield men's soccer team concluded its 2010 preseason campaign with a convincing 2–0 victory over Trinity Western University (Canada) Wednesday evening at the Main Soccer Field. The victory came one day after the Roadrunners took the Mexico U–20 National Team to penalty kicks after a scoreless outcome in regulation.

CSUB freshman Keeyan Ghazanfarpour's (Duvall, Wash./CSU Stanislaus) deflected free kick in the box in the 22nd minute found its way off a Trinity Western defender and into the back of the net for an own goal to put the 'Runners ahead early.

Sophomore Jesus Sanchez (Chula Vista, Calif./Castle Park HS) made the Spartans pay again less than six minutes later as he intercepted a pass at the top of the box and beat the goalkeeper low for the score in the 28th minute.

The Roadrunners controlled the contest for the majority of the first half, outshooting TWU 13–4 in the frame. Neither team was able to capitalize in the second half. The Spartans appeared to have scored twice but each time was whistled for an offsides infraction.

Combining on the shutout in goal were sophomore keepers Eric Shannon (Valencia HS) and Shane Ascheri (La Habra, Calif./Troy HS). Ascheri finished with three saves and Shannon added two.

CSUB outshot the Spartans 17–10 and outdrew them in corner kicks, 6–4.

The Roadrunners begin the 2010 season kicks on Wednesday, Sept. 1, against UC Santa Barbara on the Main Soccer Field. Ticket information is available by calling 661–654–BLUE (2583).
