Seven Water Polo Players Honored by ACWPC for Academic Achievement

BAKERSFIELD , Calif. –
Seven members of the CSU Bakersfield water polo program were given 2010 Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) Women's Water Polo All–Academic awards on Wednesday. Recipients are broken into three categories for their individual academic performance throughout the season while playing in a minimum of 50 percent of the team's contests. The seven award recipients marks the highest individual total of honorees during Head Coach Jason Gall's three–year tenure at CSUB.

“The amount of recipients we had this season speaks volume to the amount of quality individuals we have in our program,” said Head Coach Jason Gall. “As a team, we really stress academic performance. To have our highest academic achievement season coincide with one of our most successful seasons in the WWPA is something this team should be very proud of.”

The Roadrunners were one of just two WWPA programs in the top–25 for team cumulative GPAs. CSUB was also one of just three California State Universities to make the list.

Senior Alyson Moss earned her second outstanding rating from the ACWPC in 2010. Moss was a first–team All–WWPA selection in both the regular and post season. She also earned second–team academic all–district honors from ESPN the Magazine. She led the team with 105 points, scoring 68 goals with 37 assists. Earlier this month, she graduated with a degree in history.

Earning superior ratings were sophomore Kaitlin Torres and freshman Sam Shead. Torres, who earned a superior rating last season, was the team leader in goals scored (74) and was a second–team All–WWPA performer. Torres is a physical education and kinesiology major at CSUB. Shead was one of just two freshmen to play in all 38 contests for the Roadrunners, tallying 32 steals, 17 goals and 10 assists. She has yet to declare a major.

Sophomore Malia Pahoa and freshmen Jessica Browning, Brittani Marquez and Amanda Nesbit all earned excellent ratings. Pahoa has now earned two excellent ratings from the ACWPC while pursuing an art degree from CSUB.

Browning, who has not declared a major as of yet, was one of two freshmen to appear in all 38 games this year. She led the team with 63 drawn ejections while scoring 27 goals and six assists. She was named to the WWPA All–Freshman team.

Marquez scored 11 goals in 35 games for the Roadrunners while dishing off 22 assists. She also drew 25 ejections, the fifth highest total on the team. Marquez is pursuing a physical education and kinesiology degree.

Nesbit appeared in 23 contests in 2010, scoring one goal with five assists and eight steals. She is pursing her degree in biology at CSUB.

The Roadrunners matched their highest WWPA placing of third in 2010 after an 18–20 campaign.
