BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The CSUB softball bats enjoyed their
second most prolific afternoon at the NCAA Division I level while one of its
stars sailed into once-charted territory as the Roadrunners and the University
of San Diego split a Pacific Coast Softball Conference doubleheader for the
second consecutive day Sunday.
USD
scored early an late to squeak out an eight-inning, 6-5 victory in the opener
before CSUB rolled to a 9-3 win in the nightcap. CSUB played as the designated
visiting team at the Roadrunner Softball Complex.
CSUB
(18-28, 6-6 PCSC) pounded out 27 hits in the doubleheader, its second most ever
in four seasons of NCAA Division I play, trailing only a 29-hit barrage
against, coincidentally, USD, on Mar. 29, 2008.
The
Roadrunners put at least one runner on base in 14 of Sunday's 15 innings and
put runners in scoring position in 11 innings.
Individually,
senior second baseman Kristen Archuleta
(Hollister/San Benito HS) hit a three-run homer in the nightcap, her third
three-run bomb in four games. More significantly, it was her 10th
home run of the season, making her just the second player in Roadrunner history
to reach double figures in home runs. She needs two homers to match current
Assistant Coach Christie Hill's
school record of 12 set in 2006.
Home
runs played pivotal roles in the opener, although early on it was USD's ability
to scratch out runs that made the difference. After CSUB scored one in the top
of the first, the Toreros put a five spot on the board in their half despite
scratching out just two hits, one of those a pop fly, wind-blown double.
CSUB
starter Sammy Rodriguez (Salinas HS)
held USD in check from that point, shutting the Toreros out on three hits over
the next six innings. Despite getting runners into scoring position in each of
the first seven innings, the Roadrunners could get only two runs back on USD
ace Jennifer Ellenbeck. The first came on Rodriguez's RBI double in the third
and the second on Jaimey Kleinsmith's
(Santa Maria/College of the Sequoias) leadoff homer in the sixth.
Kleinsmith
saved her biggest blast for the seventh inning. After Rodriguez hit a one-out
single and pinch runner Jamie Miller
(Livermore/Ohlone College) moved to second on a ground out, Kleinsmith hit
Ellenbeck's two-out, 2-0 pitch out to left field to tie the game at 5-5
With
Rodriguez in top form, not allowing a Torero past first base after the second
inning, the stage seemed set for a comeback win. But Ellenbeck settled down in
the eighth, allowing just one Roadrunner single for her most effective inning
of the afternoon. Taylor Hensley rewarded that effort with a no-doubt home run
to left center on Rodriguez's first pitch in the bottom of the eighth.
Kasie Muro (Tehachapi/Santa Barbara CC) staked CSUB to a 1-0 lead in game
two with an RBI single in the second inning. But USD came back to take its only
lead of the game on Kristen Gensler's triple in the third inning and
run-scoring singles from Carey Casciola and Celeste Soto in the fourth.
The
Roadrunners responded with consecutive four-run innings in the fifth and sixth.
Archuleta capped both rallies, singling through the right side in the fifth
before hitting her homer in the sixth.
Senior
pitcher Shawna Truan (McArthur/Fall
River HS) allowed just four hits over five innings to earn her sixth win of
the season. Fellow senior Katie Chavez
(Fresno/Edison HS) tossed two innings of one-hit relief to seal the win.
Kleinsmith,
Ryane Petersen (Fresno/Fresno State)
and Emily Bliss (Northridge/Chaminade
Prep) each had three hits to pace CSUB's 14-hit attack in game one. Petersen
was one of six Roadrunners to collect two hits in the nightcap.Gensler
was the only Torero to hit safely in both games Sunday, finishing the afternoon
4-for-8. Hensley was the only other USD batter to collect multiple hits Sunday,
finishing game one 3-for-4.
CSUB
finishes its extended softball weekend with a nonconference doubleheader
against New Mexico State Monday morning. First pitch for game one is at 10 a.m.
