SARATORGA, Calif. - A pair of wild, but happy, endings resulted
in the CSUB softball team sweeping a second consecutive doubleheader from Santa
Clara University Sunday afternoon at West Valley College.
Jill McClelland's (Paso Robles/Templeton
HS) walk-off grand slam gave CSUB a 9-1 victory in game one before Karlee Rodgers (Clovis West HS) and Ryane Petersen (Fresno/Fresno State)
scored on a bizarre play to complete a 7-6, eight-inning, come from behind win
in the nightcap.
Per
conference rules, CSUB played as the home team in both games Sunday.
McClelland's
grand slam, her third home run of the season, capped a five-run fifth that
ended the game via the eight-run rule. Not that starting pitcher Sammy Rodriguez (Salinas HS) needed
that much support. She was in control for the second consecutive game. One day
after striking out a career-high nine Broncos in a four-hit win, Rodriguez
fanned seven in the abbreviated game to for her ninth victory.
An
RBI single by Kristen Archuleta
(Hollister/San Benito HS) and a run-scoring out from Heather Veitch (Simi Valley/Royal HS) in the first inning gave
Rodriguez all the offense she would need. Jaimey Kleinsmith (Santa Maria/College of the Sequoias) hit her first home run of
the season, a two-run shot, in the third inning to add a bit of insurance.
In
the fifth, Emily Bliss
(Northridge/Chaminade Prep) led off with a pinch-hit single and scored on
Veitch's double to leftcenter. Infield singles by Kleinsmith and Kelli Bailey (Rodeo/John Swett HS) set
the table for McClelland's game-ending shot.
The
relative ease of the game one win served as a stark contrast to the wild
fluctuations of momentum in game two. Stefanie Frei (Valencia/Canyon Country HS) and Kasie Muro (Tehachapi/Santa Barbara CC) got the Roadrunners off to s solid start
with RBI singles in the second inning to stake starting pitcher Katie Chavez (Fresno/Edison HS) to a
2-0 lead.
Santa
Clara stormed back, however, tying the game on Briana Knight's two-run shot in
the fourth before jumping ahead 5-2 on another Knight homer in the fifth.
The
lead didn't last long.
McClelland
doubled to open the bottom of the fifth and scored when Petersen followed with
a single to left. Archuleta then went yard with her eighth homer of the season
to tie the game at 5-5.
Rodriguez
came on in relief and quieted the Bronco bats, allowing just one hit and
striking out three until the eighth inning, when Megan Smith's two-out solo
shot gave Santa Clara the lead and a chance at the win. Until, that is, the
Broncos entered the Twilight Zone on the bottom of the eighth.
Bailey
hit a one-out single and Rodgers came in to pinch run. When McClelland popped
out to second, Roadrunner hopes faded. But Petersen kept the heartbeat going
with a two-out single through the left side. And that's when the wheels fell
off the Santa Clara wagon as CSUB scored twice from this point without ever
putting the ball in play.A
passed ball moved both runners up 60 feet before Bronco pitcher Ali Nash walked
Archuleta to load the bases. A second passed ball sent Rodgers racing home,
where catcher Amanda Edmonson's throw to Nash was too late to stop Rodgers from
tying the game.
Apparently
thinking the game was over, Nash tossed the ball back into the field. Seeing
the miscue, Petersen dashed home to score the game-winning run.
Twenty-one
Roadrunner hits produced 16 runs Sunday afternoon. Yet the final two runs
scored without a bat leaving the shoulder of a CSUB hitter.
Bailey
finished the day with four hits to lead the CSUB offense. She was one of five
Roadrunners to hit safely in both games Sunday.
CSUB
(16-26, 4-4 PCSC) ran its winning streak to four games with Sunday's sweep. The
Roadrunners will try to match their season best winning streak of five games
Saturday when they return home to host the University of San Diego in a
doubleheader that begins a six-game homestand.
