No. 20 Water Polo Captures Another Conference Victory

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The No. 20 CSUB water polo team split a pair of contests in the opening day of the Bronco Invitational hosted by Santa Clara University at the Sullivan Aquatic Center Saturday. The Roadrunners (14–18, 6–3 WWPA) won a WWPA conference match over Sonoma State, 10–8, but dropped the afternoon match to No. 6 San Jose State, 13–9.

After a close first quarter with Sonoma State, the Roadrunners opened the game up in the second stanza with a four-goal scoring outburst. The Seawolves matched CSUB's three-goal third-quarter score and added three more in the fourth but the 'Runner lead held, giving CSUB the win. Senior Alyson Moss netted a hat trick and had three field blocks. Defensive senior standout C.J. Longeuay, freshman Brittani Marquez and sophomore Kaitlin Torres each added a pair of goals. Longeuay had six steals in the game. Senior Becky Seelos had one. In goal, freshman Megan Pezzolla had nine blocks in goal.

Against the sixth–ranked San Jose State Spartans, CSUB was right in the game and with the exception of an unlucky bounce to end the first half, would have been tied with SJSU at the break. A shot with four second on the clock hit the cross bar and then struck CSUB goalie Pezzolla in the head and bounced into the goal as the buzzer sounded to give the Spartans 7–6 lead. SJSU would score six of the game's final nine goals to pull away for the 13–9 win. Moss added her second hat trick of the day while Torres scored two for the second–consecutive game. Longeuay, Marquez, sophomore Malia Pahoa and freshman Jessica Browning each had one goal. Marquez was effective offensively, drawing three ejections while Longeuay came away with three steals. Pezzolla had 13 blocks in goal.

"We were right with San Jose State," Head Coach Jason Gall said. "I thought we played them much closer than the score indicated. It was important for us to hold for the win against Sonoma State after they caught some momentum late in the game. I though we responded very well today."

CSUB closes play in Santa Clara tomorrow with a pair of conference matches beginning with the host Broncos at 10:30 a.m., followed by a 3:30 p.m. tilt against Cal State San Bernardino.
