DAVIS, Calif. – The CSUB water polo team captured a WWPA win before falling to the nation's No. 15 ranked team Saturday at the UC Davis Aggie Shootout. CSUB (8-11 overall, 4-1 WWPA) beat conference rival Sonoma State, 13-2, in the opening game before falling to the host No. 15 Aggies in the nightcap, 12-5.
In the first game, it was the play of senior Becky Seelos that got the team off and running as she scored the first three goals of the game. She would finish with a game–high of five. Senior Alyson Moss and freshman Haylie Glandon each had a pair of goals. Senior Jessica Manke, junior Tammy Barksdale and freshmen Jessica Browning and Brittany Marquez each had one. While she didn't score, sophomore Katilin Torres had two assists. Moss and freshman Amanda Nesbit each had three steals. Barksdale drew a five meter and scored her goal on the ensuing penalty. Marquez was also active offensively, drawing two five–meter ejections. In goal, freshman Megan Pezzolla had eight blocks before sophomore Megan Wetherbee relieved her in the fourth quarter. Wetherbee ended with two blocks.
"I thought we played really well today coming off our long break," said Head Coach Jason Gall. "Becky really got us going today. We've been working really hard these last two weeks and it really paid off today. Our passes were strong, we were quick so it was nice to see everything we had been working on really come together. It was a good team win."
The second game did not go quite as smoothly for the Roadrunners. CSUB was down just 5-3 at the break before the Aggies went on to outscore the Roadrunners 7-2 the rest of the way.
Seelos added two more goals, leading the 'Runners in scoring for the second consecutive game. Moss, freshman Sam Shead and Torres each added one goal.
Torres and Marquez each drew five-meter ejections, leading to Torres' goal at the end of the second quarter. Pezzolla had eight blocks while playing the entire game in goal.
"We made a couple costly mistakes against Davis," said Gall. "But I thought we were right in the game for most of it. I don't think the score was that indicative of how close the game really was."
The UC Davis tournament concludes tomorrow with the Roadrunners' stiffest test to date. The 11 a.m. opponent will be the current No. 2 ranked Cardinal of Stanford.
