NORTHRIDGE,
Calif. - The flood of doubles continued for the CSUB softball team as the
Roadrunners opened the 2010 Matador Invitational with an 8-3 victory over fellow
Pacific Coast Softball Conference member Saint Mary's College at Cal State
Northridge.
The
nonconference win was CSUB's (6-8 overall) fourth in a row. Saint Mary's falls
to 5-5 with the loss.
After
bagging a school-record six doubles in its last game versus Utah Valley, CSUB
added four doubles Friday as part of its 13-hit attack. Kelli Bailey
(Rodeo/John Swett HS)
doubled twice-the fifth multi-double game of her career-to help the Roadrunners
jump out to a 5-1 lead after two innings.
That
proved to be all the support sophomore pitcher Sammy Rodriguez (Salinas HS) would need. Rodriguez
fanned a career-high eight Gaels and allowed just four hits to earn her fourth
win of the season.
The
first four 'Runners to come to bat got hits. RBI singles by Bailey and Ryane Petersen (Fresno/Fresno State) opened the scoring before bases-loaded walks to
Rodriguez and Jaimey Kleinsmith (Santa Maria/College of the Sequoias) capped the four-run first
inning.
Saint
Mary's scored on the lone CSUB error of the morning to pull one back in the
bottom of the first before Bailey's RBI double to deep center restored the
four-run lead. An RBI single by Danielle Lyman (Moreno Valley/Canyon Springs
HS)
highlighted a two-run fourth that essentially put the game on ice.
The
teams traded homeruns over the final three innings. Senior second baseman Kristin
Archuleta (Hollister/San Benito HS) hit her first of the season for CSUB. Catcher
Jenna Smith and centerfielder Michelle Mounts added solo shots for Saint
Mary's.
Bailey's
two double were part of a 3-for-4 day for the senior third baseman. Archuleta
and Petersen each went 2-for-4 with Archuleta adding three RBIs.
Rebecca
Sabatini and Katherine Delpit had the other two hits for Saint Mary's.
Weather permitting, CSUB continues play at the Matador Invitational Satiurday with games against Iowa at 11 a.m. and Santa Clara at 1 p.m.
