No. 18 Water Polo Splits Opening Day of Home Invitational

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The No. 18 CSUB water polo team spit a pair of contests Saturday at the Hillman Aquatic Center on the first day of the Roadrunner Invitational II. The Roadrunners (12–15 overall, 4–3 WWPA) lost a tight game to conference rival No. 20 UC San Diego, 14–13, in the opening contest but rebounded for a big upset victory over No. 15 UC Davis in the afternoon, 10–9.

After falling behind early to UC San Diego, CSUB came back to take its first lead of the game late in the third quarter on an Alyson Moss penalty shot, 11–10. The game remained close until the final minute of play when the Triton's Hanalei Crowell missed a penalty shot but collected the rebound and scored to give UCSD a 14–13 lead. A late push by the Roadrunners was not enough as San Diego held on for the close victory.

Moss had five goals while sophomore Kaitlin Torres scored four. Senior C.J. Longeuay had two big goals in the fourth quarter. Senior Becky Seelos and sophomore Malia Pahoa each had one goal. In goal, freshman Megan Pezzolla had three blocks playing three quarters while sophomore Megan Wetherbee had one block in the second quarter.

Against the No. 15 Aggies, the Roadrunners were determined to start hotter than they did in the morning session. The team's matched scores through the first quarter until CSUB jumped into the lead, 7–4, with a four goal second quarter. Davis continued the pressure late into the game and scored three–consecutive goals to pull within one with 1:33 left to play, 10–9. But the Roadrunner defense held strong and withstood a last second shot attempt by Davis to pull the upset. The win was CSUB's first over UC Davis in program history.

Moss, freshman Sam Shead and Torres each had a pair of goal for the Roadrunners in the win. Seelos, Longeuay and freshmen Brittani Marquez and Jessica Browning each added single strikes for CSUB. Pezzolla had a strong game in net, recording seven blocks.

The Roadrunner Invitational concludes tomorrow as CSUB takes on Brown at 10:20 a.m. and Chapman at 3 p.m.
