Water Polo Splits Contests at San Diego State

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The CSUB water polo team came up short in an upset bid Sunday in the final day of the Aztec Invitational hosted by San diego State but did pick up its third victory of the weekend. The Roadrunners (11-14 overall) beat Wagner in the first game, 9-4, before falling to the host and No. 14 ranked San Diego State Aztecs in the afternoon, 9-3.

After a close first half against Wagner, CSUB took control with four goals in the third quarter. Up by three, 5-2, freshman goalkeeper Megan Pezzolla blocked a five-meter penalty shot to keep the momentum on the Roadrunners side. The 'Runners led by as many as six, 9-3, late in the fourth before Wagner scored to give the game its final margin. Senior Alyson Moss led the way with four goals. Sophomore Kaitlin Torres continued her strong weekend with a pair of goals. Sophomores Malia Pahoa and Sierra Peltcher each scored one goal. Freshman Jessica Browning was strong offensively, scoring a goal and drawing three ejections. Freshman Brittani Marquez had three steals defensively. Pahoa and senior C.J. Longeuay each contributed two steals. Senior Becky Seelos drew a five-meter ejection which led to one of Moss' four goals. Pezzolla had 12 blocks including the big five-meter block.

"I thought we played good defense against Wagner," said Head Coach Jason Gall. "All of our field players got in today. I thought we played under control today and we were able to take a three-game winning streak into our game against San Diego State."

Offense proved hard to come by in the second game against No. 14 San Diego State. A defensive scoreless first quarter gave CSUB hope that it could avenge a 13-3 setback the Aztecs handed them in the first meeting between the teams. But a trio of second quarter goals by San Diego State while the Roadrunner offense remained stagnant broke the game open. CSUB's offense came back with a pair of third quarter goals as SDSU led 5-3 heading into the fourth. But four fourth-quarter tallies by the Aztecs to the Roadrunners' one sealed the win for San Diego State.

Freshman Sam Shead, Torres and Browning each scored goals for the 'Runners. Moss and Longeuay tallied a pair of field blocks defensively. Moss also had three steals and Seelos added two. Offensively, Marquez had two assists and Browning drew three ejections including a five-meter penalty. Seelos and Pahoa each drew two ejections. Pezzolla had seven blocks in goal.

"The game was much closer than the score showed," commented Gall after the match. "We missed 20 attempts and a five meter. We played hard offensively but we were just unable to score. We made good passes and had good looks. It came down to the fact that they put away their opportunites to score and we didn't. We are looking forward to returning home in a couple of weeks."

CSUB will have next weekend off before hosting the Roadrunner Invitational II beginning on Saturday, Mar. 27 and continuing through Sunday, Mar. 28.
