SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The CSUB water polo team picked up a pair of victories Saturday at the Aztec Invitaitonal hosted by San Diego State. In the morning session, the 'Runners knocked off No. 18 Princeton in an overtime thriller, 11-10. CSUB followed it up with an 11-9 victory in the afternoon over Marist. The wins moved the Roadrunners to 10-13 overall.
Down 8-4 to Princeton early in the final quarter, CSUB rallied to tie the game with just 14 seconds remaining as senior Alyson Moss scored. In the first overtime session, senior Becky Seelos scored to put the 'Runners up 9-8 before the Tigers tied it again at 9-9. Moss again showed her last second clutch scoring ability, netting a goal with just two seconds remaining to give CSUB a 10-9 lead heading into the second ovetime session. Princeton would tie the game 10-10 and looked as if things were heading into sudden death. But with just 26 seconds left, sophomore Kaitlin Torres answered with the game-winning shot.
Torres scored a game-high four goals while Moss had three to go along with a pair of steals. Seelos added a pair. Freshmen Jessica Browning and Brittani Marquez each had one. In goal, freshman Megan Pezzolla had 15 saves and got some help defensively from senior C.J. Longeuay who had four field blocks.
"A great comeback win for us," Head Coach Jason Gall said. "We made some mistakes in the first half but we were able to correct those in second half and overtime. It was a good win for us."
Early against Marist, the Roadrunners had to battle against defecits before pulling away late. With the score tied 6-6, CSUB would score five of the final eight goals to capture the victory. Torres again paced the offense, scoring four goals. She has now scored four goals in her last three contests. Moss had two goals and two assists. Browning, Longueay, Seelos, senior Jessica Manke and sophomore Malia Pahoa each had one. Marquez and Torres each had two assists while Browning drew two ejections. Pezzolla had eight blocks in goal.
