No. 9 Lions Pull Away From Roadrunners

LOS ANGELES – The CSUB water polo team dropped a road WWPA conference game to No. 9 Loyola Marymount Friday afternoon, 10–7, at the Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center. CSUB is now 8–13 overall and 4–2 in conference play. The Lions improve to 11–2 and a perfect 3–0 in WWPA action.

Sophomore Kaitlin Torres tallied a game–high four goals while senior Alyson Moss added a pair. Senior Jessica Manke had the other Roadrunner goal. Freshman Megan Pezzolla had five blocks in goal.

Even with LMU retaining the lead throughout the contest, CSUB pressured the conference leader the entire game. Down just 1–0 after the first quarter, CSUB battled back to pull to within one, 3–2, as Torres scored a six–on–five goal. But LMU closed the half on a 2–0 run and opened the second half with a goal to gain a four–goal advantage.

Down by five, 10–5, midway through the fourth quarter, CSUB closed storng, scoring the game's final two goals.

CSUB drew nine ejections including five five–meter penalties.

"We had just a couple of breakdowns today," said Head Coach Jason Gall. "It was nice for us to be competitive but I thought our mistakes may have costed us the game. We are looking forward to playing them in our pool at the end of April."

CSUB heads to the San Diego State Aztec Tournament for a pair of games on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, the Roadrunners take on Princeton at 9:15 a.m. and Marist at 3:30 p.m. Sunday's slate includes Wagner at 10:30 a.m. and host San Diego State at 4:45 p.m.
