BAKERSFIELD,
Calif. - The CSUB and Utah Valley softball teams dodged raindrops to split a
doubleheader Saturday afternoon at the Roadrunner Softball Complex. UVU made
four early runs stand up in a 4-1 opening game win. CSUB exploded for 11 runs
and 15 hits in the nightcap, earning the split with an 11-6 victory.
Junior
outfielder Stefanie Frei (Valencia/Canyon Country HS) enjoyed the first four-hit
game of her collegiate career, going 4-for-4 with a pair of RBIs in game two.
She finished the day 5-for-8 with a run and three RBIs. Kristen Archuleta
(Hollister/San Benito HS) and Ryane Petersen (Fresno/Fresno State) each hit safely in both
games, including two-hit efforts in the nightcap.
Rightfielder
Charlee Cisneros went 2-for-3 in both games to lead the Wolverine offense.
UVU
took advantage of a leadoff walk and an error to score a pair of unearned runs
in the first inning of game one. RBI singles by Meghan Woodworth and Cisneros
added two more in the second, and that proved to be all Wolverine starter Kyli
Flanary would need. Though she had trouble locating the strikezone, Roadrunner
hitters had trouble making solid contact against her until late, when a tough
break thwarted CSUB's comeback bid.
Trailing
4-0, a one-out Jaimey Kleinsmith (Santa Maria/College of the Sequoias) double and a an RBI single
by Frei got CSUB one run back in the seventh. Karlee Rodgers (Clovis West
HS)
reached on a throwing error that sent Frei to third base. Archuleta followed
with a hard smash to third. UVU third baseman Jessica Anderson made a nice
reflex stab to grab the ball and her momentum carried her into Frei for one
out. She easily tossed across the diamond for the game-ending double play.
CSUB
looked like it would make game two a laugher early, answering a first-inning
UVU score with a five spot of its own. Jill McLelland's (Paso
Robles/Templeton HS)
bases-clearing double was the big blow in the inning.
Following
a 40-minute rain delay, RBI doubles by Anderson and Amanda Perez sparked a
five-run Wolverine rally that put UVU back on top, 6-5. But the first five
'Runners to bat in the bottom of the third reached base before Kasie Muro's
(Tehachapi/Santa Barbara CC) RBI single to right capped a four-run CSUB
response that put the 'Runners ahead to stay.
Senior
pitcher Katie Chavez (Fresno/Edison HS) recovered from her one shaky inning to
record her first complete game of the season, fanning six while leveling her
record at 1-1.
The
split leaves CSUB at 3-8 overall. Utah Valley sits at 3-3. Although both teams
are members of the Pacific Coast Softball Conference, this weekend's series are
nonconference games.
CSUB
and UVU will close the four-game set with a doubleheader Sunday at the
Roadrunner Softball Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
