SEATTLE, Wash. - One game after being held her lowest scoring output of the season, senior Katie Williams (Las Vegas/Reedley College) roared back to score 19 points as she and the CSUB women's basketball team ruined Seattle University's senior day with a 64-44 victory at the Connolly Center in Seattle, Wash. Williams and three other Roadrunners reached double figures as CSUB improved to 16-10 on the year as it swept the season series from the Redhawks. Seattle falls to 6-22, 5-9 at home.
Junior Tamiko Davis (Sacramento, Calif./San Jose State) recorded her sixth double-double of the year, pulling 13 boards and scoring 13 points. Senior Kelley Tarver (Valencia HS) also added 13 and a team-high six assists. Freshman Amber Williams (Fontana, Calif./Etiwanda HS) added a dozen with three steals. Senior Phynique Allen found early foul trouble and was held scoreless for the first time this year. Sophomore Jana Smith returned to action after missing the past 15 games with a knee injury. She had not played since Jan. 16, 2009, at Saint Mary's College.
For just the second time this season, CSUB was on the negative end of the turnover battle, committing 16 while forcing just 15. The Roadrunners entered the week as the nation's leader in turnover margin. On the positive side, the 'Runners outrebounded Seattle, 37-34, marking just the fourth time the team had accomplished that feat.
A tight start to the game quickly turned to CSUB's favor midway through. Seattle's lone lead of the game on a Maggie McCarthy layup with 13 minutes left in the first half. Up by one at the 10:57 mark, 16-15, CSUB went on an 18-4 run to take a commanding lead. Davis led all scorers with 13 points and recorded both of her blocked shots in the opening stanza. The Roadrunners shots were falling as they hit 53.3 percent (16-of-30) of thier first-half field goals.
Seattle never challenged in the second half as the lead never dipped below 12 points. An Amber Williams three pointer with 4:57 left to play gave the 'Runners a 22 point lead, 60-38, their largest of the evening.
By holding Seattle to just 44 points, CSUB improved to 86-0 all time when holding opponents under 60 points. This marked the sixth time this season the Roadrunners have accomplished this feat with two wins coming at the expense of the Redhawks.
CSUB will have a week and a half to prepare for its next opponent, the SIU-Edwardsville Cougars. The game will be played in Edwardsville, Ill., on Wednesday, March 3.
