BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The No. 17 CSUB water polo team split a pair of contests during the opening day of the Roadrunner Invitational Friday at the Hillman Aquatics Center. The 'Runners fell to No. 9 Hartwick, 17–11, in the opening game but rebounded to score a 17–8 win over Cal Lutheran in the second game.
Hartwick showed fans why it garnered a top–10 ranking heading into the weekend's tournament. The Hawks built a halftime lead of four, 8–4, before adding nine more in the second, including a five–goal output in the fourth quarter. CSUB pulled to within a two, 10–8, with 3:36 remaining in the third quarter but Hartwick answered right back with a pair of unanswered goals to seal the win. Senior Becky Seelos, freshman Sam Shead and sophomore Kaitlin Torres each had a pair of goals for the Roadrunners. Seniors Alyson Moss and C.J. Longeuay, sophomores Kellie Goodwin and Sierra Peltcher, and freshman Jessica Browning each tallied single goals. In net, freshman Megan Pezzolla had six blocks.
CSUB jumped to an early 6–1 first quarter lead over Cal Lutheran. But at the end of the first half CLU went on a run that carried over to the second, scoring five unanswered goals to pull within three, 9–6. But Moss shut the door, netting a third–quarter hat trick to push the Roadrunner advantage back out to a comfortable 13–6. Moss finished with four goals as did Torres. Sophomore Malia Pahoa, Goodwin and Browning each had a pair. Seniors Seelos, Jessica Manke and Brittany Berry each had one. In goal, Pezzolla had four blocks in the first half and sophomore Megan Wetherbee had four blocks while playing the second half.
CSUB will take on a pair of WWPA Conference opponents tomorrow starting with Colorado State at 7:45 a.m. followed by Cal State East Bay at 1:10 p.m.
