Rainbow Wahine Too Much For Roadrunners

HONOLULU, Hawaii – Two 20–plus Hawaii performances were too much to handle as the CSUB women's basketball team dropped a 84–74 decision to Hawaii in the final game of day two of the Pepsi Rainbow Wahine Invitational Wednesday night.

The Roadrunners' trend of living and dying from behind the arc continued early on as 15 of the first 17 'Runner points came by way of three–pointers. Hawaii (6–6) and CSUB (9–9) went bucket–for–bucket through the first ten minutes, exchanging the lead several times. Senior guard Britney McGee (Bakersfield, Calif./Univ. of Albany) came in off of the bench and scored eight consecutive points, including two consecutive treys, to help build a four point lead for the 'Runners.

Hawaii, however, countered with a 10–3 run to regain the lead.  CSUB foul trouble sent the Rainbow Wahine to the line through the last five minutes of the half, and despite seven made three pointers from the Roadrunners, the 'Bows took a nine–point lead into the break (41–32).

CSUB's start to the second half was nearly identical to its start in the first as freshman guard Cebrina Johnson (Corona, Calif./Santiago HS) and junior guard Kristine Herman (San Ramon, Calif./Florida Gulf Coast) hit back–to–back threes to cut Hawaii's lead to five.

Sophomore guard Amber Williams (Fontana, Calif./Etiwanda HS) and freshman guard Tyonna Outland (Compton, Calif./Lynwood HS) each added a trey and a pair of free throws to bring the 'Runners to within one point with a little under ten minutes remaining in the game. McGee eventually hit a jumper to put CSUB up by one, however, Hawaii used a 6–0 run to pull away once again.

Hawaii freshman Kamilah Jackson silenced the Roadrunners' come back attempt as she scored 31 points for the Rainbow Wahine to lead them to a 10–point win.

Hawaii had three players finish in double–figure scoring, including Jackson and Keisha Kenekoa (22 points), while four different 'Runners finished in double–digits. Herman led the way with 16 points while Outland (15 points) Williams (14 points) and McGee (13 points) each put up solid efforts. McGee also led CSUB in rebounds, pulling down eight.

The Roadrunners will play their last game of 2010 in Honolulu, Hawaii as they face Columbia Dec. 30 to close out the Rainbow Wahine Invitational. Tip–off is scheduled for 7 p.m. PST.
